Nearly £500m in legal services awards/frameworks up for grabs in next two years

There are 211 legal services awards and frameworks worth £482m due to expire across the wider public sector in the next two years, research by government procurement data provider Tussell has found.

Tussell also ranked DAC Beachcroft first in the top ten legal services suppliers to the public sector in 2017, with the firm winning an estimated £138m in awards and frameworks.

Weightmans ranked second with awards/frameworks valued at £83m, with Browne Jacobson ranked third (£66m), Cornerstone Barristers fourth (£60m), Bevan Brittan fifth (£57m), Hill Dickinson sixth (£48m), Kennedys Law seventh (£47m), Mills & Reeve eighth (£44m), Hempsons ninth (£41m) and Bond Dickinson in tenth position with £38m in award/framework value.

Tussell said the success of the top suppliers could be partly attributed to a £480m framework issued by NHS Resolution (formerly The NHS Litigation Authority) in May 2017. Eight of the top ten suppliers were listed on the framework.

Gus Tugendhat, Founder of Tussell, said: “In 2017 the value of wider public sector procurement was £144bn - equating to roughly 7% of UK GDP – representing a significant strategic opportunity for UK business. It is great to see how well the Legal Services sector is benefitting from the commercial opportunity to work with government.”

On the methodology used, a spokeswoman for Tussell said: “The data is based on contract value rather than actual fees earned. In the case of most awards, the value is the amount that has been allocated to that specific supplier over the course of the contract. With frameworks, the value is a theoretical share of the maximum value of the overall framework.”
