Tributes paid following death of former Head of Government Legal Service

Tributes have been paid following the death of Sir Paul Jenkins, who was Treasury Solicitor, the Attorney General’s Permanent Secretary, Head of the Government Legal Service from 2006 to 2014.

Matrix Chambers, which Sir Paul joined as an associate member in 2015, confirmed the news “with great sadness”.

The set said: “Sir Paul was a valued member of Matrix Chambers, in practice he acted as an independent adviser and consultant, specializing in sensitive investigations, inquires, compliance audits and reviews both internationally and in the UK.”

Sir Paul was also a Trustee and Board member of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law as well as a member of the Ethics Committee at Tate. He was currently serving as Treasurer of Middle Temple.

Jason Housden, Interim Chief Executive at Matrix, said: “Our immediate thoughts are with his partner René at this sad time. Admired by all whose life he touched, his death is a huge loss for his family, Matrix and the wider legal community. He was a committed and pioneering lawyer, a great colleague and a simply wonderful friend. He will be missed beyond words. As news of his death sinks in the tears will flow but he leaves behind a lifetime of achievement and a wealth of happy memories for all who knew him.”

Hugh Southey QC, Chair of Matrix’s Management Committee said: “Paul was loved by all at Matrix. He is a great loss who will be missed by all.”

Law firm Browne Jacobson, where Sir Paul was a consultant, said it was saddened by his passing.

"A consummate professional and a warm, inspirational human being. We will miss working with him but are convinced his example will continue to guide us," it said.
